We were determined to keep our mother out of a nursing home as long as possible and because Medicaid coverage of assisted living is generally poor, we saw no strong reason to engage in such asset sheltering leaving aside considerations of the ethics of the practice. Ultimately however once it became clear that Ruth would need nursing home care we did consult an attorney who specializes in this area and were advised to spend or transfer her assets down to a level that would legally entitle her to Medicaid assistance sometime in the future. As things turned out she never lived long enough for us to confront that decision.

我們已下定決心盡可能的不讓我們的母親到養老院，因為生活輔助的公共醫療補助制度所含蓋的範圍一般而言是不良的，我們沒有看到強而有力的理由來從事這類資產庇護，而撇開道德實際的思考。然而最終，一旦露絲明確需要護理居家照顧，在將來某些時候，我們諮詢這方面的專業律師並被建議把她的資產花掉或轉移到一個程度以下使她符合合法的醫療援助。事實證明她永遠不會住足夠長的時間讓我們正視此一決定。
